Two snowshoers and their dog were entombed in an avalanche near the Hoosier Pass on Saturday.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado – Two snowshoers and their dog were killed in an avalanche near Hoosier Pass in Summit County on Saturday, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC).

The Summit County Rescue Group said Sunday morning it had been informed of the disappearance of two snowshoers in the Crystal Lake area. Snowshoers were late for a hike on Saturday, rescuers said.

Rescuers found the couple’s car in the parking lot at the top of Hoosier Pass. A search team comprising two teams of avalanche dogs and a Flight for Life helicopter crew searched the area. They found what appeared to be snowshoe tracks near a recent avalanche on a side of North Star Mountain, CAIC said.

Rescuers said the avalanche occurred just under a mile north of Hoosier Pass at an elevation of about 11,700 feet.

At around 2 p.m. Sunday, an avalanche rescue dog located the two snowshoers and their dog, all buried under avalanche debris, according to the CAIC. All three were dead. Their names have not yet been released.

Avalanche danger in Summit County on Saturday was rated as considerable, or level three on a scale of one to five, according to the CAIC.
