The staff and current canine residents of the Lawrence Humane Society are grateful for the community’s response to their call for help last week.
The Humane Society had 26 dogs adopted during a special $20 dog adoption offer from May 25-30, according to an update from Elina Alterman, director of development and communications. By comparison, last year on the same dates, they only adopted 17 dogs, she said.
“Thanks to our community really showing up for us, we have some breathing room and no longer have to split kennels in half to accommodate all the dogs that come in,” Alterman said.
On top of that, 15 dogs were matched with foster families, nearly doubling the number of dogs in foster care, Alterman said. Eleven of those dogs went to brand new foster homes that had applied simply because they saw the need for help.
“However, with summer just getting started and admissions consistently higher during the summer months, we know we are not completely off the hook,” Alterman said via email Wednesday. . “We therefore encourage anyone interested in applying to become a host family!
She said staff members were still working through any host family applications they had received and trying to make good matches.
“And for anyone who has applied to be fostered in but hasn’t been found yet, that doesn’t mean we won’t find one soon! Dogs still come into the shelter every day, so having a ready pool of potential host families is a huge help,” she said.
Nala, one of the dogs mentioned in our article last week, was adopted into a wonderful family “with two little kids who already love her very much!” Sage is also in foster care and Charlee has an adoption meeting scheduled, Alterman said.
