Neglected dog rescued by Friends Forever Animal Rescue; now on the road to recovery

LIVERPOOL, NY (WSYR-TV) – It was just this Sunday that Megan Sienkiewicz was browsing a Facebook group to repatriate animals when she saw this heartbreaking image.

It was the photo Megan Sienkiewicz saw on Facebook that inspired her to take action.

“A woman was literally begging for a new home for a dog and I saw a photo of a very emaciated and wet dog,” Sienkiewicz said.

Sienkiewicz is a medical coordinator for Friends Forever Animal Rescue and couldn’t say no. She went to Auburn.

“I was looking for the house and saw a woman in a camping chair holding a dog and it didn’t even look like a dog,” Sienkiewicz said.

The woman had taken the dog to its owner for help, telling Sienkiewicz the dog was starved and neglected.

Sienkiewicz said the dog was crying and could barely walk. She quickly went into emergency mode and took the dog in for an assessment. Once verified, she got a name, Clara.

On the same day, Clara secured temporary accommodation with a trusted foster family.

“Even though she groomed me and I saw a photo, seeing Clara in person was very shocking,” said animal foster parent Kelly Reilley.

Clara was in bad shape when Reilley got her. She had flat feet and sores all over her body from being in a crate too long. She looked like a dog skeleton.

“We had to carry her everywhere. She could only walk a few steps and then she fell. She still falls when she squats down to urinate,”

Barely three days later, Clara is already walking around on her own, eating and drinking.

“Last night she rolled over a bit as best she could and she wanted to have her belly rubbed. It was very, very huge,” Reilley said.

Clara has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but she is now doing it with a wagging tail, a twinkle in her eye and a strong will to live and be loved.

If you would like to donate to help Clara, you can visit the Friends Forever Animal Rescue website or Facebook page. You can also visit the Justice for Clara Facebook page here.

Sienkiewicz filed a report against the owners with CNY’s Fingers Lakes SPCA.
